May: Pruning Shrubs
Now that the danger of frost has hopefully passed you can start to prune shrubs and get them back in to shape. Make sure you check for birds nests as you should not disturb them if found.
With evergreens that are not too woody, start pruning and remove any areas that have been damaged by the frost, adding them to your compost heap. You must also keep an eye out for early signs of viburnum beetle grubs this time of year. if left to flourish, holes will start to appear in the leaves and the shrub will look tatty. If caught early these can be brushed off by hand, but you may find more serious infestations from other pests such as aphids. if needed, a suitable insecticide is your best solution.
