July: Keeping Hydrated
We made it! Glorious sunshine, sizzling barbeques and lots brilliant flower blooms in your garden. Summer is officially here! We know you may want to relax on your sun lounger all summer long, but it’s time once again to put your gloves on and get gardening this July. Don’t forget sun cream!
The warm weather will be encouraging rapid growth in your garden, with many plants thriving and coming in to bloom with vivid displays of bright and bold colours and wonderful scented flowers. However, you must not be fooled! As we all know Summer can still throw a few surprises with sudden changes in weather, so it is important to prepare for this.
Usually the biggest battle against the weather in July is making sure every plant stays hydrated and healthy without wasting too much water. Make the most of your water by watering plants during the coolest times of the day. Water early in morning and late in the evening. If you have been keeping water butts over the past few months you will start to see your investment begin to pay off, as you garden requires constant watering.
Make sure you pay close attention to plants in containers as they can dry out easily and loose nutrients quickly. Check the soil twice daily, it should be kept moist throughout hot days. If you find your containers are too soggy, it may be worth checking the drainage holes for any blockage and make sure that water is draining freely. To maintain constant nutrients, you should use liquid fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro All Purpose Liquid Plant Food every 2 to 4 weeks.
To make certain you are giving your container plants enough, water them to the rim of the pot, allowing it to drain and then water up to the rim once again. Keeping in mind that the goal is to keep the soil moist but not soggy. This method will hopefully save the need for you to water every day.
Lastly, plants lose much of their hydration through their leaves. By simply grouping pots together they will benefit from mutual shade and dry out less quickly.
