Perennials with Winter Interest
Bring some winter cheer to the garden with some really great perennials with winter interest. These great plants have a variety of fragrant smells, colourful berries and flowers.
Chaenomeles superba ‘Pink Lady’
This beautiful deciduous shrub makes a low growing bush with bright green glossy leaves. Over the winter this particular plant blooms small but bright pink buds and in the spring grow quince fruit that can be cooked and eaten.
Sarcococca confusa
This attractive evergreen shrub has simple, leathery leaves and tiny, highly fragrant white and cream flowers which bloom over the winter and spring. After flowering this shrub will grow berries coloured red, purple or black which can some times last in to the following winter.
Viburnum tinus
This shrub is evergreen with simple lobed leaves and clusters of small white or pink fragrant flowers. Once its flowers have died back you will see small blue berries appear.
Jasminum nudiflorum
Also known as Winter Jasmine due to flowering during winter, this evergreen shrub has climbing stems with pinnate leaves, yellow flowers that can be very fragrant and black berries.
Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’
Skimmia are evergreen shrubs with aromatic leaves and groups of white and yellow flowers. Fertilised female plants have shiny red berries and are a great plant to bring some colour in to your winter garden.
