Your March Checklist
We’ve compiled a list of jobs to do in your garden this March to help you maintain your garden and get ready for (hopefully) more pleasent spring season weather.
1, Prune Brush & Shrub Roses
The aim of pruning is to open up the centre of the plant by thinning out overcrowded growth. This improves light & air cirulation and reduces pests & disease problems. Remember to mulch well after pruning.
2, Lift & Divide Perennials
Large overgrown clumps of summer-flowering perennials like Hemerocallis and Anemone can be lifted using a garden fork and divided for planting in other parts of the garden. Remember to water them well.
3, Sow Hardy Annuals
Towards the end of the month , cornflowers, calendulas, and poppies can be sown outside. Level and rake the area to a fine consistency before sowing in drills. Keep watered, and thin out as they grow.
4, Prune Dogwoods & Willows
One year old shoots of dogwoods, willows and ornamental Rubus give the best winter colour, so prune back last years growth to one or two buds, leaving a short framework from which new shoots will grow.
5, Sow Hardy Herbs
Chives, fennel, dill and parsley can be sown in seed trays under cover now. If you already have chives in your garden, divide the clump then plant and water it.
6, Watch out for nesting Birds
Tie up bunches of tiny twigs, dried moss and stringy vegetable matter near bird feeders to help support garden birds with their nest building. Take care to check hedges and trees before pruning as they will likely contain bird nests that you must avoid disturbing.
7, Establish Trees
Pinch out the flowers on any newly planted fruit trees or bushes, so that the plant’s engergy goes in to establishing a good root systemduring the summer.
