Why Gardening is Good for your Mental Health

Gardening is Stress Reducing
A busy lifestyle can bring with it a lot of unwanted stress. Taking a moment to focus in the quiet setting of your garden can improve you stress levels drastically. Just 30 minutes of gardening each day has been proven to lower your cholesterol, the hormone closely associated with stress. Fresh air has also been thought to affect serotonin levels released in the body, making you feel relaxed or happy.
2, Lowers Anxiety
As well as the advantage to breathing in the fresh air while you tend to your garden, Mycobacterium Vaccae, a bacteria found naturally in soil has also been shown to reduce anxiety when naturally encountered in the garden. This non-pathogenic bacterium is said to stimulate neurons leading to an increase in serotonin levels.
3, Exercise
Gardening is considered a moderate-intensity exercise that actually burns more calories per hour when compared to walking for the same amount of time. it is estimated that just one hour of light gardening can burn up to 330 calories.
Raking involves making a pulling motion back and forth which exercises the arms, back, legs and shoulders. An hour of raking leaves can burn between 250 to 300 calories. Sweeping, similar to raking burns around 200 calories an hour and exercises arms, shoulders and your back and finally activities such as trimming are a great exercise for stretching arms and knuckles.
