Peat Free: Have You Made the Switch?
As we try to become more environment conscious, alternative products that replace the need to use unsustainable mediums become more and more reliable and exciting to use. At Busy Bee our popular peat-free compost is easily available and we hope to encourage our customer to make the switch as the ban on peat approaches in 2026. This article will hopefully answer any questions you have about peat-free compost and why you should consider making the switch to this environmentally sound alternative.
Our Pledge
By 2026 the garden centre industry will no longer be allowed to sell compost containing peat. Peat is a natural mineral rich resource that acts as a vital filter for carbon in the environment as well as being home to many species of micro-organism. Traditionally peat has been used in compost to help plants grow with its rich nutrients. Busy Bee has been gradually adding peat-free alternatives to our range and in 2026 we aim to be fully peat free.
What do we offer
We stock a host of both peat free and peat reduced alternatives. Currently our peat free range includes New Horizon, Boost and New Horizon Veg. For peat reduced you can use Jacks Magic, The Gardeners Compost.
Why go with peat free?
Until now, gardeners had to choose between peat-based or peat-free compost. Although compost containing peat can give great results, many gardeners are choosing to be more eco-friendly. Some peat-free composts lack nutrients and don’t give desired results. However, through 18 years of research and £35 million investment, gardeners no longer need to compromise. Now days peat free compost holds up very well to its peat-based predecessor, but here’s something to consider. The lack of peat will mean a lesser ability to retain water, which means nutrients will run away so when using peat free it is recommended to use a slow-release fertiliser and to add water retaining granules in to mix. We recommend Boost for your fertilizing needs.
What does it contain?
If we look at one of our popular peat free composts – New Horizon, it is created with Westland’s BIO3™ technology:
1.West+ creates the structure to support root growth
2.Coir+ stores and releases nutrients and moisture
3.BioFibre promotes fast and effective nutrient transfer to plant cells
This is achieved without any green waste.
